TranzAlpine Train Journey – a trip of life time

TranzAlpineTrain

TranzAlpineTrain

One of the world’s greatest train journeys, the TranzAlpine links the South Island’s east and west coasts via the Southern Alps between Christchurch and Greymouth.

Climb aboard one of the world’s most famous train journeys, between Christchurch and Greymouth. Cross the fertile farmlands of the Canterbury Plains, and enjoy thrilling vistas over deep gorges as you travel alongside the ice-fed Waimakariri River. Traverse the mighty Southern Alps, where spectacular views of the chiselled alpine landscape will take your breath away at every turn.

In 2011 a fleet of new purpose-built scenic carriages were rolled out across our three long distance services. These world-class carriages were built right here in New Zealand, and were designed to enhance both the comfort and scenic experience of our passengers while on board. Carriages are carpeted, centrally heated and air-conditioned, and provide exceptional views from non-reflective panoramic side & roof windows – perfect for capturing dramatic coastal & mountain views.

Comfortable saloon seating is available either configured paired seating around tables. The ride is quieter and smoother than train journeys of past, thanks to an advanced air- bag suspension system.

Open air viewing

There is nothing quite like the feeling of fresh alpine air rushing through your hair, and a trip out to the open air viewing carriage will give you just that. The open air carriages also ensure nothing gets between you, your camera, and the stunning New Zealand landscapes. If you’re travelling during the winter months be sure to pack a coat and hat as it can get a little chilly, especially in the alpine regions.
